What We Grow
PrairieSky Farm is a small family farm three miles south of Attica, Kansas, on the edge of the Red Hills. We grow vegetables, herbs and melons using organic practices and heirloom seed.
Right now: we are between seasons
We are not harvesting for market at the moment. It has been over 100 degrees nearly every day for the past month, and in that kind of heat the plants stop setting fruit and the greens turn bitter and bolt. Rather than bring thin, stressed produce to market, we have paused and are putting our effort into soil, seed and planning for next season.
This is the honest reality of growing food in south central Kansas. We would rather tell you than have you drive out for an empty stand. Follow along below and we will post here the moment we are picking again.
Planned for next season
Here is what is going in the ground next year. We choose varieties for flavor first, which is why you will see names you will not find in a grocery store.
Lettuce & greens
- Jericho Romaine — bred in the Israeli desert to hold sweetness in heat, which matters a great deal here.
- Anuenue green leaf — a Hawaiian variety, crisp and slow to bolt.
- Baby leaf lettuce — cut small and tender for salad mix.
- Arugula, two varieties — one mild, one peppery.
Cucumbers
- Japanese — long, thin-skinned, never bitter. No peeling needed.
- English — mild and seedless, good for fresh eating.
Tomatoes
- Heirloom — grown for flavor, not for shipping.
- Cherry — sweet, for eating by the handful.
- Slicers — picked ripe off the vine.
Peppers
- Padrón — blistered in a hot pan with salt. Most are mild; roughly one in ten is hot.
- Italian — sweet frying peppers.
- Jalapeño
Herbs
- Basil — Italian (Genovese) and Thai.
- Winter and summer savory — excellent with beans and pork.
- Dill
- Lemon balm
- Heirloom sage
Also going in
- Garlic, two varieties
- Cantaloupe, two varieties
- Green beans
Where to find us
Reno County Farmers Market — Hutchinson, Kansas
This is where we bring our produce during the growing season. Market days and hours for the coming season will be posted here once the schedule is set — email us in the meantime and we will let you know when we are back.
CSA boxes near Attica — coming soon
We are putting together a small CSA for families in and around Attica, so you can get our produce without the drive to Hutchinson. Here is the plan we are working toward:
- A box with three or four different vegetables and herbs, picked that morning.
- $20 to $30 per box, depending on what is ready.
- Local pickup near Attica.
We need a handful of committed households to make it work. If you would want a box, tell us now — there is no payment and no commitment yet, we are simply finding out whether there is enough interest to run it next season.
